Fake Accounts: The Hidden Danger in Social Networks

A “fake account” is a user account on social networks or online platforms that has been created using a false or stolen identity. Unlike bots, these accounts are operated by real people – which makes them particularly dangerous. In the context of Russian disinformation, fake accounts are a central instrument used to manipulate and divide public opinion and to spread the narratives of the Russian government. These profiles are not simply isolated cases, but part of organised and coordinated campaigns.

One example is the Russian “Doppelgänger” campaign, which imitated fake websites of well-known media outlets such as “Süddeutsche Zeitung” or “Spiegel”.

How Fake Accounts Manipulate Public Opinion

Amplification
They deliberately spread, like, and share false information in order to create the impression of broad public support that does not actually exist.

“Troll farms”
Organisations such as the “Internet Research Agency” in St Petersburg deliberately create fake profiles in order to influence opinions and manipulate algorithms.

Division of society
They inflame existing conflicts and spread false information about minorities, political opponents, or Western institutions.

Manipulation of algorithms
Through large-scale interaction with specific content, fake accounts attempt to manipulate the algorithms of social media platforms. This ensures that false information appears more frequently in the feeds of real users, thereby amplifying its impact.
